A Room For My Boys
November 05, 2017
This summer when my older sister Katie told me that she + her husband were expecting a third baby and my two nephews Hudson and Everett would soon be sharing a room – I immediately got excited. I love imagining spaces and love a good transformation. Here is a little look at the space before…. The space is a good size, has beautiful floors and great light – so an amazing place to start. I started with the wallpaper (duh!) I decided to create a NEW colorway for our Gridlock print something a little lighter to brighten the room and match the trim. We decided on grey + navy for the main color for the room, they felt like colors that can grow with the boys and the styling can be changed out as they grow and their interests changes. Next, I thought about a loose theme to keep the room imaginative and fun. I loved the idea of the great outdoors + summer camp as they live in Wisconsin. When I happened upon a collaboration between Camp Wandawega + Land of Nod – it felt like the perfect place to start. I created a mood board for my sister so that she could understand the look/feel and got to work! Bunkbeds, dressers + mattresses were ordered. I spent two days a few months apart styling the room (mostly because of travel) but loved how it gave me a step away from the space to come back and edit and make changes.
The dressers became a focal point for the room. Originally, I was going to do a gallery wall above but felt like less was more.
Between the adorable wall hanging from Land of Nod and the vintage tennis racquets I scored at an auction I felt like it was the perfect balance of old + new.
The bunkbeds were a huge hit with the boys + the excitement of unboxing Casper might have been the best part of the day! I have always been skeptical of memory foam mattresses. Are they really that comfortable? Let me tell you, YES.THEY.ARE. Sleeping on a Casper is like sleeping on a cloud…not to mention make for a great jumping surface :) We moved the bookshelf to make room for the dressers and created a little reading book for the boys to store all their books! It was also the perfect spot for one of our NEW prints. My sister and I decided on the Blue Peace Sign for a jolt of color in the room. I also loved how it paired with the ROYGBV color coded books! Designing a room for my nephews was truly an honor. But perhaps that most amazing thing, was in designing and preparing the room, we had not yet met the new baby (or whether it was a boy or girl!) Baby Grace joined the party a week before we shot the space and it made for a very special moment. My heart is FULL! They are the sweetest big brothers - I am such a proud Aunt :)
